About Gabrielle and her work

the story ….
Through my paintings, I show the mystery, the beauty and the passion of nature, both in Africa and in America. I also express the tragedy of
the country of my birth, Zimbabwe. I was brought up on a farm in the country. The bush was my playground, wild animals my companions.

the journey …
I was trained in Studio Art in Switzerland and my painting study lasted many years in Hong Kong. I began painting animals because of the grave concern I have for the on-going fate of wildlife as well as the plight of the people. I return to Zimbabwe annually to gather inspiration and material for my artwork. I also live and work on The Hippo, my houseboat in Sausalito, California, USA. Living on the water gives me unique opportunities to paint the abundant bird life in the area as well as the beautiful landscape.

“The Artist’s paintings are extraordinary, multi-layered watercolors that show an innate, deep-rooted empathy for her subject matter and the environment”, so said a well-known professor of art. “Her technique is sophisticated yet hasn’t lost the courage to experiment. Many of the paintings are on rice paper, which gives a translucence and delicacy to even the most massive of subject matter”.

My Studio and Gallery, on the Hippo, are open to the public. Original watercolors, both framed and unframed, are available as well as prints of the original artwork.
